Well Catharine I hope that I will not have to write you many more letters for we think that we are on our way home.  We left Raleigh on the 25th April and marched 12 miles and laid in camp until Monday the 1st of May when we lit out for this place where we arrived this morning at about 8 o’clock.

We marched from 20 to 30 miles per day.  The weather is very hot and the roads dusty which made our march very fatiguing.  We expect to start in a day or two for Washington city and then we expect to be at home in a few days.  As mail goes out in a few minutes I must close hoping this will find you well.  I cannot tell you where to direct your letters and would not advise you to write until you hear from me again.  Remember me as ever

E. J. Allton
