Elias S. Smith

4th Sergeant, Co. "K", 48th Alabama Regiment
Enlisted, 2 May 1862, Peeks Hill, Calhoun County, Alabama
Honorably discharged, 9 April 1865

Elias S. Smith once told his youngest daughter by his second marriage, Bertie Lee Smith, that the hardest thing that had happened to him during the Civil War was seeing his brother killed in battle and being unable to bring his body off the battlefield. His brother, William H. Smith, Pvt., Co. "K", 48th Alabama Regiment, was buried in the Confederate Cemetery, Knoxville, TN. William was enlisted on 2 February 1863, at Mt. Polk, Alabama, by Captain John B. Hubbard. Elias had another brother, Joshua A. Smith, who was also in Co. "K" of the 48th Alabama. Joshua Smith died, 9 April 1863, of typhoid fever at Wayside Hospital (General Hospital, No. 9), Richmond, Virginia. [Verification from military records, Alabama State Dept. of Archives and History.]
