Franks, however, attempted not to press their

advantage by an invasion of Spain. There

the Mohammedans remained for many centuries.

Cordova became the seat of art and learning.

The Arab philosophers became the sages of

the West. With the subsidence of prejudice

the unlettered peoples beyond the Pyrenees

and the Alps began to repair to the Mohammedan schools to receive an education which

could not be obtained in the barbarous institutions of the North. The seeds of learning

were scattered by the scholars of Islam, and

the Crescent taught the Cross the rudiments

of art.
