Vol. 49 Introduction - Serial 104

After Hood led his Army of Tennessee to destruction at Nashville and Franklin, there were no large battles in the Western theater because the CSA had no large forces there. Sherman took his army to the sea, then into the Carolinas, but that was not the end of operations in the West. Plenty of small forces remained, and the US government needed to occupy as much territory as possible to assert political control, or at least deny the CSA control and legitimacy. The stage was set for small battles, skirmishes and guerrillas throughout the Union-occupied South, and raids into the areas that the Union had not yet occupied.

This volume concludes the correspondence (mainly Union, but also Confederate) about operations outside the main theater of war in 1865.
