Vol. 46 Introduction - Serial 97

At the beginning of 1865 all eyes focused on the Eastern theater. Sherman had marched his army to the sea, Lee still held Grant at bay in front of Petersburg and Richmond. The Union was gearing up for a final campaign, and they got it. Sherman marched through the Carolinas, battering Joe Johnston's army when they met, and Grant broke the lines at Petersburg as well as outflanking them at Five Forks. Within days of Lee evacuating Petersburg, Grant overhauled him at Appomattox Courthouse. Johnston wouldn't surrender for a few more days, but the war was effectively over.

This volume finishes the detailed correspondence supporting and fleshing out the reports of the previous volume. Most of the material is US.
