Vol. 44 Introduction
This volume covers the end of Sherman's March to the Sea, as he closed in on Savannah, Georgia. It took five weeks of maneuvering and minor actions to pry the Confederates out of Savannah's defenses, which only reinforced the strong geographical position. Sherman took his time and minimized his losses, although he could not catch Hardee's men, who escaped (for the moment) into South Carolina.
This volume has the reports, including Sherman, Joe Wheeler, Gustavus Smith, and Judson Kilpatrick, and the correspondence that fills in the gaps.
