While the war would be decided east of the Mississippi, the troops west of that river were still busy. Each raided the other, the Confederates to keep the Union from sending troops to other areas, the Union to keep the Confederates on the defensive and undermine Confederate legitimacy as a government. There were also the Indians on the Plains, and the settlers there would take matters into their own hands. These four volumes trace the second half of 1864 in the backwater beyond the Mississippi.

This volume contains telegrams, orders, returns, and other material that shed more light on the terse official reports. It covers September 1, 1864 to October 16, 1864.
