Vol. 37 Introduction - Serial 70

These two volumes cover Eastern theater operations away from the main armies in mid-1864. In Western Virginia, over into Kentucky and along the Maryland line there was skirmishing and guerrilla action (including Mosby) that resulted in paperwork if not headlines. The Confederacy maintained its supremacy in the Shenandoah Valley, not only repulsing a Union offensive towards Lynchburg, but sending Jubal Early raiding towards Washington. Early was only turned back at Monocacy Creek, Maryland.

This volume has the reports of the various actions fought in the shadows cast by the Armies of the Potomac and Northern Virginia. It includes reports from Mosby, Crook, Rutherford B. Hayes, Jubal Early, Franz Sigel, Lew Wallace, and John Gordon.
It also has some of the supporting correspondence.
