The removal of the two brigades of cavalry will uncover the road to Greenville, S. C. It will be necessary to keep them until the Hampton Legion passes on that road.

The commanding general desires that you will start the Hampton Legion for Greeneville, S. C., as ordered by the War Department on Tuesday morning, provided you do not receive authority from the Department before then to retain it. The Legion will take with it its transportation, and you will please order your quartermaster to issue to it an additional wagon and team.

GENERAL: Information from other sources confirms the statement int he dispatch of Colonel Maury as to the defection in the southern counties of Mississippi. The lieutenant-general commanding is of opinion an infantry force is indispensable so far as Smith Country is concerned. He has accordingly organization such force, which will leave here to-morrow for Meridian, under Colonel Lowry, one of the oldest colonels in this army, and an officer of vigor and decision.
