Commanding Officer First Corps:

The major-general commanding directs me to inform you that General Buford has been ordered to force a passage at Germanna as soon as possible and follow the enemy, and endeavor to open Morton's Ford in conjunction with your corps. You will, therefore, as soon as you learn that General Buford has crossed at Germanna, endeavor to carry Morton's Ford, and, upon doing so, will await the arrival to General Buford and follow and support him, moving up the river. You will keep the major-general commanding advised of everything important that transpires, and will also advise General Sedgwick of your crossing and of your movements, as he will be directed, in the event of your success, to endeavor to cross at the fords in his front and move in conjunction with your corps.

Commanding Officer First Corps:

The major-general commanding directs that in the event of your crossing the Rapidan successfully, and in moving up the river uncover the front of General Sedgwick and put yourself in communication with him. You will take position on the heights opposite the railroad crossing. The cavalry will follow the enemy in the direction of Orange Court-House.

Commanding Officer Cavalry Corps:

The major-general commanding directs that General Buford will inform General Newton as soon as he has crossed at Germanna. General Newton will then cross at Morton's Ford and await the arrival of Buford. General Buford will follow the enemy up the river. Newton will follow and support. Sedgwick will in succession cross at the fords of his front and join in the support of the cavalry.
