Series I, Volume XXIII is divided into two parts, reports and correspondence, relating to operations in Kentucky, Middle and East Tennessee, Northern Alabama, and South West Virginia from January 21, 1863 through August 10, 1863. Topics include, but are not limited to, action at Franklin, TN and the Middle Tennessee Campaign. Included are reports by Major General Henry Halleck, Major General Ambrose E. Burnside, and Major General William S. Rosecrans of the Union Army and General Braxton Bragg and Major Joseph Wheeler of the Confederate Army.

Part Two of Series I, Volume XXIII is correspondence, relating to operations in Kentucky, Middle and East Tennessee, Northern Alabama, and South West Virginia from January 21, 1863 through August 10, 1863.
