General Peck telegraphs that our victory is complete, and that Pryor passed through Carrsville in full retreat at 3 p. m., 6 miles from the Deserted House, where our forces attacked him just before daylight.

FORT MONROE, VA., January 30, 1863.

Major-General HALLECK, General-in-Chief:

Pryor fell back 3 or 4 miles, contesting the ground in his retreat. General Peck gives me no details, but thinks we have a victory, and that he shall secure some of the enemy's guns. Our loss about 100.* The roads are very deep, and our men have had a hard time in getting through them.

Have just received a report from a party I sent out to the vicinity of Carrsville for information to the effect that the cars have been running briskly to Franklin since afternoon.

ADMIRAL: Will you oblige me by sending an officer to confer with General Viele, at Norfolk, in regard to illicit trade? The privilege of trading has been abused, and I am desirous of surrounding it will all possible safeguard. I have given no permits to introduce goods into Norfolk since the 17th instant, and think I shall confine commercial transactions there hereafter to retail dealers.
