Topics include actions in and around Washington, New Berne, Goldsborough, (Goldsboro) and Kinston, North Carolina; and Franklin and Suffolk, Virginia. Reports by Major General John G. Foster of the Union Army and Major General Samuel G. French of the Confederate Army can be found in this volume.

Part Two of Series I, Volume XVII contains correspondence relating to operations in West Tennessee and Northern Mississippi, June 10, 1862 through January 20, 1863.
