Lucius Caecilius Metellus

Roman general and statesman. General during the First Punic War (264-241 BC). He defeated the Carthaginian general Hasdrubal at Panormus (now Palermo, Sicily) by scaring the enemy's elephants. An image of elephants often appeared on coins issued by his family after that battle.
