Japanese surrender on USS Missouri
War Ends

After Germany's surrender, the Allies began transferring troops from the European Theater of Operations to the Pacific for the anticipated invasion of the Japanese Home Islands. However, President Truman would make a different decision. On August 6, 1945, an American B-29 bomber called "Enola Gay" dropped an atomic bomb on the city of Hiroshima. Three days later, another B-29 dropped another atomic bomb on Nagasaki. On August 15 (V-J Day), Japan surrendered, which was officially signed on September 2, 1945, on board the United States battleship Missouri. The war was officially over.
