Japanese surrender on USS Missouri
War Ends

The collapse complete, Germany formally surrendered on May 8, 1945 (V-E Day). After the surrender, the major allied nations-United States, Soviet Union, Great Britain, and France-divided Germany, each taking their own sector. The division of Germany would last until the end of the Cold War in the 1990s.

In the Pacific, American forces landed on Okinawa on April 1, 1945, the closest they had yet come to the Japanese mainland.     (MORE)
