Never in American history had the entire nation come together for a single cause like it did during World War II. Businesses and individuals alike put aside differences and personal ambitions to support the war effort. Major industries and automobile makers ceased making appliances and automobiles and began producing tanks, aircraft, and munitions. For most of the war, no new cars were made for public consumption. The expansion of the war industry sharply reduced the unemployment rate in the United States, which, like much of the rest of the world, had suffered over a decade of depression and high unemployment.
