Overview:   Part of the old Prussian officer corps; recorded a solid record of high command during World War II.
 
Biography:   During World War II Rundstedt had a stormy relationship with Hitler; he ended up being relieved or retired from active duty three times. In 1940, he served as commander-in-chief of Army Group South during the invasion of France. He was promoted to Field Marshal that same year. For the invasion of Russia (Operation Barbarossa) he commanded Army Group South. He resigned on December 1, 1941.

He was recalled in March 1942 and became commander-in-chief, West and Army Group D. His primary task was to prepare for the eventually invasion by Allied forces into Weste Karl Rudolf Gerd von Rundstedt
