Description:  
      First of three wars between Rome and Carthage. The First Punic War (264 to 241 b.c.) was a struggle for control of Sicily and of the sea lanes in the Western Mediterranean. It was triggered by a revolt in the city of Messina. Ultimately it ended with a Roman victory.
