Chalk Bluff (1863)

War:   American Civil War

Date(s):   1 May 1863 - 2 May 1863

Location:   Clay County, Arkansas, US

Outcome:   Confederate tactical victory

Description:   Brig. Gen. William Vandever, USA

Brig. Gen. John S. Marmaduke, CSA

Vandever had a reinforced division against the Confederate cavalry division.

Casualty numbers are unknown.

Brig. Gen. William Vandever pursued Marmaduke from Cape Girardeau to Chalk Bluff, where the Confederates were crossing the St. Francis River. To cover the withdrawal, Marmaduke established a rearguard that received heavy punishment on May 1-2. Although most of Marmaduke's raiders crossed the St. Francis River, they suffered heavy casualties. The expedition came to an inglorious end.
