woods. We went forward about one mile or so when suddenly out of the darkness came the challenge, "Halt, who comes there?" I answered, "Friends." Then came the order, "Dismount and come forward and let yourself be known." I could just see the forms of men about twenty or thirty yards away, and seeing there was a large number of them I spoke to my men to retreat, as we turned our horses about, I shouted "Go to hell." At this they fired a volley which wounded three of my six men. Turning back we soon met Colonel Harnden coming up on a gallop at the head of a squad of men.
