From its population of 775,000 people, the state of Wisconsin raised 53 infantry regiments, 13 light artillery batteries, 1 heavy artillery regiment, and 4 cavalry regiments to fight for the Union. No major actions took place in Wisconsin, but the state did lose over 12,000 men during the war, almost 4,000 killed or mortally wounded in action.
