TEXAS

On February 1, 1861, the state of Texas, with its population of 604,000, seceded from the Union. Texans created 2 cavalry regiments for the Union but over 50 for the Confederacy, as well as 22 infantry regiments, 2 heavy artillery regiments, and nearly 30 field artillery batteries.

On February 18, 1861, General David E. Twiggs, a United States Army general sympathetic to the Southern cause, surrendered his command to Texas officials. Major actions in Texas occurred at Palmetto Ranch, Galveston, and Sabine Pass.

Texas was readmitted to the Union in 1870.
