TENNESSEE

Next to Virginia, no state saw more action or destruction during the Civil War than did Tennessee. Tennessee seceded on May 7, 1861, but raised units for both the Confederacy and the Union.

Seventy-five infantry regiments, more than 30 cavalry regiments and battalions, and several independent artillery batteries fought for the Confederacy; eleven infantry regiments, 8 mounted infantry regiments, 1 heavy artillery regiment of African descent, and 14 cavalry regiments fought for the Union. Major battles occurred at Shiloh, April 6-7, 1862; Stones River, December 31, 1862-January 3, 1863; Lookout Mountain, November 24, 1863; Missionary Ridge, November 25, 1863; Franklin, November 30, 1864, and Nashville, December 15-16, 1864.

Tennessee was readmitted to the Union in 1866.
