5th South Carolina Cavalry Regiment Company I
This company was raised in Barnwell and Orangeburg Districts by
James W. Reed of Willow Swamp, Orangeburg District, during December 1861 and
January 1862. It was mustered in as Co. A, 2d, later 14th Battalion SC Cavalry.
At the time of its reorganization for Confed-erate service in May 1862, Captain
Reed was home on sick leave, and Peter A. Raysor of Orangeburg was elected
captain in his place.

Co. D, 2d/14th Battalion SC Cavalry
28 Dec 1861. Station: [Camp Hampton, near Columbia,

May & Jun 1862. Station: McPhersonville, SC. This
Company was in a skirmish at Old Pocotaligo, S.C., on the 29th May, 1862.
Jul & Aug 1862. Station: McPhersonville, SC. Sep
& Oct 1862. Station: McPhersonville, SC. On the morning of the
22nd Oct. 1862, the Company was ordered by Col. W. S. Walker to report at Hd.
Quarters. The order was obeyed with alacrity. The Company then rec'd. Enfield
rifles and was ordered to march to Mackays Point on the Coosaw river to meet the
enemy who was reported to have landed in force at that point. The order was
obeyed in part. The enemy having advanced from the Point, the Company was
ordered to remain at Old Pocotaligo at which place they engaged the enemy.
Casualties [as] follows: Killed, one Private. Wounded: two privates painfully.
