Raised in Colleton District. It is surmised that "Oswald's Co." and the "Grey Riders of St. Bartholomew's" (also known as the "Colleton Grey Riders") were one and the same, and that the unit did not complete its organization after Captain Oswald was elected Majoror. Some of the men are known to have served with Jeffords' Co. (South Carolina Rangers), and later with Co. B, 3d SC Cavalry.
