PENNSYLVANIA

The state of Pennsylvania contributed a total of 337,936 men - including almost 15,000 African-Americans - to fight the Confederates in the Civil War. Of a total population of 2.8 million, 8.2% of the men went to war.

Over 200 infantry regiments were raised (not including militia), as were nearly 30 cavalry regiments, and several dozen artillery batteries and regiments. The Pennsylvanians suffered 15,265 deaths from battle and 17,918 deaths from diseases and other causes, for a total of 33,183 war dead. The biggest event in Pennsylvania during the war was the Battle of Gettysburg, July 1-3, 1863.
