OHIO

The state of Ohio contributed the third largest number of men for the Union effort in the Civil War. Over 300,000 men from Ohio enlisted, constituting just over 7.6% of the total population of 2.3 million, which included over 36,000 African-Americans. The state raised about two hundred Infantry regiments, almost three-dozen artillery batteries and regiments, and over a dozen cavalry regiments. The most famous generals to come out of Ohio were Ulysses S. Grant and William Tecumseh Sherman.

The only major event in Ohio during the war was a raid in July 1863 by Confederate raider John Hunt Morgan. It ended with Morgan in the State Penitentiary, although he soon escaped.

Ohio lost 35,475 dead during the war, of which 11,588 were killed in battle or mortally wounded. 23,887 died from diseases and other causes.
