MINNESOTA

Minnesota possessed a sparse population in 1860 with only 172,000 (259 free blacks) people living in the state. Regardless, Minnesota raised 11 infantry regiments, 1 artillery regiment and 3 batteries, and 2 cavalry regiments for the Union (about the same number as Florida raised for the Confederacy). No major actions took place in Minnesota.
