Hawleyville, Iowa
April 14th 1867

Dear Brother and Sister

We are all well at present thanks to the giver of all good for his great Mercy and goodnefs to us. Nancy and family are all well and appear well satisfyed. We have had the most disagreeable winter and Spring that I ever witnessed I think that March Exceed anything that I Ever witnessed anywhere but for the past ten days the weather has been better and farmers are generally done Sowing wheat I finished Sowing day before yesterday I onley Sowed twenty Bushel a great many of the farmers are Sowing from fifty to one hundred Bushel Corn and all other kinds of feed is verry Scarce and high Corn Sells at one dollar per Bushel wheat two dollars oats 65 cents and there is none Scarcely to be had at them figures Stock as a general thing Looks worse than I Ever Saw it in this country We have three Head of Horses that looks tolerable well and the rest Looks Like the wind will Blow them away I guess that I will have grain Enough to make out on by Being a Little Saveing I thought for a while that I would have to Buy Some corn But Since I got through Sowing wheat I had a Little more Left than I Expected and I Shall try to make out while I am on the grain Subject I will give you a Little Idea of the way people Seem disposed to treat Nancy there is a man here by the Name of Macomber who has given her ten Acres of Land to attend in corn this Season free of rent Alex Duncan has given her ground to Sow wheat on free of rent and two other men viz. Thomas McAlpin and J. Harris Each gave her thee Bushels of Seed wheat and this week we are going to Sow it for her I should Like to know what Jonathan will think of that he said that the people out here was the most Selfish people that he Ever Saw But I ask does this Look Like it You will Say no I should Like to know what Jonathan is doing and where he is Liveing I have never had a Scratch from him Since he Left By the way we Learned throug a Letter from Mrs. Clapp to Nancy that Father was married But didn't Say who to or anything of the kind. I would have Supposed that he could have taken time to write after geting married hope he will not Entirely forget us. I shall Direct this Letter to Haysville as it Seems to us out here that there is a Screw Loose at Ludlow. Asbury is also sending a Letter

Mr Clapps Daughter directed Haysville
