Elisha Marion Hanby Intro

These Letters were donated by Sally Gordon. Even though Elisha Hanby was not from the 49th Indiana, I wanted to put them online to share with all!

THREE CIVIL WAR LETTERS from ELISHA MARION HANBY (1845 Cumberland, Marion Co. IN -1932 Middletown, Henry Co. IN) to his parents in Dudley Twp., Henry Co. IN,

William Clinton Hanby (1813-1889) & Hannah Ann Fowler Hanby (1824-1895); (letters in custody of Daniel Gordon, in Portland OR 1998 -- brother of Sally Gordon)

About Elisha M. Hanby:

Elisha Marion Hanby was in the Civil War 4 months, in Co. F, 53rd Ind. Infantry. He was 20 in Feb. 1865 when he enlisted with the 53rd Indiana Infantry at Dublin [Floyd Co. IN] and was sent at once to Indianapolis where he was in camp two or three weeks. From Indianapolis he went to New York City and was in camp on the waterfront one week when he was ordered South. He was enroute to join Sherman’s army in its march to the sea when he was ordered to remain at Wilmington, N.C.

---Middletown News p. 1, Feb. 25? 1930, article on his 85th birthday celebration.

He was postmaster for 4 years in Middletown, appointed in Cleveland’s first administration. He was a plasterer by trade, and a member of the G.A.R.
