ILLINOIS

In 1861, the state of Illinois had a population of 1.7 million people, but only 7,000 were black. The state saw no major military actions, but the southern part of the state, especially Cairo, was used as a staging are for troops moving South. Over 150 infantry regiments were raised from Illinois, as well as 17 cavalry regiments, and 15 artillery battalions and companies. Over 34,000 men from Illinois died during the war, almost 10,000 killed in action or mortally wounded.
