DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA

For the capital of a nation at war, the District of Columbia sat in a most precarious position - surrounded by hostile Virginia on one side and potentially hostile Maryland on the other. Nevertheless, the Federal Government continued operating in the city, even as the city was threatened by Confederate forces on a couple of occasions. For the city's defense and for service in the Union army, the District raised 6 infantry regiments, 1 cavalry company, 1 cavalry regiment, and 30 independent infantry companies. 41 Men from Washington, D.C. fell in action or were mortally wounded for the Union and another 249 lost their lives from diseases and accidents.
