DELAWARE

Although the state of Delaware was a slave state and had much in common with its southern neighbors, when Civil War erupted in 1861, it sided with the Union. Of its population of 112,000, 1,800 were slaves, 90,500 were white, and 19,000 were white males between the ages of 15-39. For the Union cause, Delaware raised 9 infantry regiments, 1 cavalry regiment, 1 heavy artillery battery, and 1 light artillery battery. No major military actions took place in Delaware. 383 men from Delaware were killed or mortally wounded and another 499 died from diseases and other causes, for a total death count of 882.
