CONNECTICUT

With 460,138 people, Connecticut enlisted 55,864, 12.1% of its total population. 2,163 of them joined the Navy or the Marines, and 1,784 were Blacks who joined the US Colored Troops. 5,354 died for their country or their cause, 1,947 from battle, 528 while prisoners of war, the rest from disease or injuries.

The men formed two Heavy Artillery Regiments (that mainly served in the Washington, D.C. garrison), three light artillery batteries, one cavalry regiment, and 30 infantry regiments - two of which were "African Descent".

There were no battles in Connecticut, but Nutmeg State troops fought in most major eastern battles, some along the coast in the various amphibious operations, and a few did fight in the West.
