CALIFORNIA

In 1860, California possessed a total population 379,985 people, of which just over 150,000 were between the fighting ages of 15 and 39. The State raised 2 cavalry regiments, 8 infantry regiments, and 1 battalion of mountaineers. Most of the actions and operations in California during the war were against the Indians. California troops lost 108 killed in action and 465 from diseases and other causes, for a total loss of 573.
