Garnett’s & Golding’s Farms (1862)

War:   American Civil War

Date(s):   27 Jun 1862 - 28 Jun 1862

Location:   Henrico County, Virginia, US

Outcome:   Inconclusive

Principal   Commanders:   Union: George B. McClellan

Description:   Maj. Gen. John B. Magruder, CSA

Both sides engaged division-sized forces.

Losses were light, only about 800 men.

While battle raged north of the Chickahominy River at Gaines’ Mill on June 27, Magruder feinted against the Union line south of the river at Garnett’s Farm to pin down Union reserves. To escape an artillery crossfire, the Federal defenders from Maj. Gen. Samuel P. Heintzelman’s III Corps swung their line backwards. The Confederates attacked again near Golding’s Farm on the morning of June 28 but were easily repulsed. These “fixing” actions heightened the fear in the Union high command that an all out attack would be launched against them south of the river.

In retrospect we know that Lee’s army was weaker than McClellan’s, but McClellan was convinced that Lee had around 200,000 men. In the circumstances, a feint on the Union left would have set up an attack on the right.
