Salineville (1863)

War:   American Civil War

Also known as:   New Lisbon, New Lisbon Road, Wellsville

Date(s):   26 Jul 1863

Location:   Columbiana County, Ohio, US

Outcome:   Union victory

Description:   Brig. Gen. James Shackelford, USA
Brig. Gen. John Hunt Morgan, CSA

Morgan had only about 400 men against a Union division, around 2,600.

The Union didn’t suffer a scratch, while Morgan surrendered his whole command.

After escaping encirclement at Buffington’s Island with about 800 of his men, Morgan continued east and north, attempting to find a safe crossing over the Ohio River. Every day fewer men could keep up, and his force dwindled to about half.

With several columns of Union cavalry in hot pursuit, Morgan passed through Salineville, riding down the railroad toward Smith’s Ford. Turning onto the New Lisbon Road, Morgan’s raiders were finally cut off. Morgan gave up to avoid useless bloodshed.
