Marais des Cygnes (1864)

War:   American Civil War

Also known as:   Battle of Osage, Battle of Trading Post

Date(s):   25 Oct 1864

Location:   Linn County, Kansas, US

Outcome:   Union victory

Description:   Maj. Gen. Alfred Pleasonton, USA
Maj. Gen. John S. Marmaduke and Maj. Gen. James F. Fagan, CSA

Each side had a cavalry division.

Casualties are unknown.

As Price withdrew south from the disaster at Westport, Pleasonton led the pursuit and followed him into Kansas. Price had kept too much of his wagon train, for no particular reason, and it slowed down his retreat. Pleasonton caught up at Marais des Cygnes.

After an artillery bombardment that started at 4am, Pleasonton's men attacked furiously. Although outnumbered, they hit the Rebel line hard and forced them to withdraw again. They fell back towards Mine Creek, where the two columns would fight again that day.
