Amos Hardy from Fort Sumner to his father

Columbia Hospital

Washington, D.C.

July 18th, 1864

Dear Father

I suppose by the time you get this letter you will have got the other one I worte you last week. After I got here I was put on duty for a day or two as the nurses were sent into the defenses to repel the rebel raiders and the sick had to take care of the sick. I am doing nothing new and I should have gone to Maine(?) if it had not been for the duty I had to do. I won’t make much odds anyhow and I think that the men who reported to Augusta(?) will have to go to the front first.

I went down to the City and got my ration(?) money yes Saturday and got the sum of (6.75) (sic) six dollars and 75 cts and enclosed you will find 4.00/four dollars the amount I got from you.

We get no news at all from the front and don’t know what Abe(?) is doing. The Rebs have left Maryland and I don’t think they will trouble Washington again right away.

From your Son Amos E. Hardy
