Provost Marshal notifies family of William Follett's death

Mr. A.H. Follett

Dear Sir

It becomes my painful duty as Comdt of Co. C 112th Ill. Vol Infty to announce to you the Death of William Follett, a member of my Co. he was Killed on the afternoon of the 14th Day of May 1864 at the Battle of Resacca (sic) Ga by the bursting of a Shell near him a piece of which or a ball from the inside of the Shell. Penetrating the body near the Heart. Killing him instantly. he died in the faithful Discharge of his duty as a Soldier. his life is deeply Regretted by all his comrades and it is our Sincere wish that this sad news may be borne by the friends and relatives of our Deceased Comrade. with Fortitude and Becoming Resignation and to the Bereaved Widow and Orphan child we extend our Heartfelt Sympathy and regards and can only add that we Buried his remains as decently as Circumstances would admit. a Board marked with his name the Letter of his Co. and No. of his Regt. marks the Spot where he Rests. His Little Person effects I will forward to his widow So soon as circumstances will permit the Same with Safety. I Have the Honor to be Most
