eReview: Superstition Mountain Museum

Location: Apache Junction, Arizona

Review by R MUSTO

As a young boy I read stories about the Lost Dutchman’s Mine. I recently had the chance to visit the area of the mine and the Superstition Mountain Museum, which is located along the Apache Trail under the backdrop of the Superstition Mountains.(The Museum is located 3.5 miles N.E. of Apache Junction on the Apache Trail-State Route 88 in Arizona)

The museum’s collection brings alive the history of the Superstition Mountains and Apache Junction. The Lost Dutchman exhibit presents twenty-three maps of paper, adobe and stone, which may lead you to Dutchman’s Lost Gold Mine.

Animal and Reptile life such as the mule dear, porcupine, coyote, various snake and bird species are displayed in a life like setting. Visitors travel back in time as one browse over the prehistoric Indian exhibit of bowls, arrowheads, stone hammers and ax heads.

The museum has one of the two Stamp Mills in the country; the mill was used to recover gold from quartz in the 1800s.

The gift shop provides a collection of guide and history books on Central Arizona, along with Native American jewelry, maps, postcards and tourist information.
