December 7, 1941: The Pearl Harbor attack came as a total surprise to the United States. At the time of the attack, a Japanese diplomat was in Washington discussing a peace format. The American forces suffered 2343 killed, 1272 wounded, and close to 1000 missing. The Japanese lost fewer than 100 men.
