SUSAN METROS
My mother died suddenly of a heart attack in October of 1993. Like
many mothers and daughters, our relationship was volatile in nature
and ran the gamut from love to hate. In response to my loss, I
conceived, designed and authored a CD-ROM Art piece titled, "good
daughter, bad mother, good mother, bad daughter: catharsis +
continuum." Because it was an honest appraisal of my relationship
with my mother, I was extremely nervous about my father's response.
When he finally viewed it, he turned to me, looked me straight in
the eye, wagged his finger in my face, and said, "You better not
do something like this about me after I die."
So, "collections + [RE]collections" is dedicated to my almost
ninety year-old father while he still is around to enjoy it.
This Website is based on his memories of four years overseas
fighting in World War II. He has painstakingly written all the
stories, annotated all his photographs, and spent countless hours
in front of a video camera, reminiscing and recollecting about
stories both haunting and humorous. My father professes that he
survived the war because he was a coward and he could "run
faster, dig deeper, and never volunteered." I profess he is
the bravest man I have ever had the pleasure of knowing.
