Working on the "collections and (re)collections" project has been very
fulfilling for me, for more than one reason. The technical aspect of
working on a site that tries to be both informative and entertaining,
while maintaining a serious tone, was particularly interesting. Also,
having to keep in mind the technical skills and limitations of our main
target group was a great reminder not to go overboard on anything.
On a different level, my paternal grandfather was a political prisoner
in Dachau during the period immediately prior to the start of the war and
including the first year or so of the war. I never met him, and he
would never speak of his experience during those years to others. The
section of this site that focuses on Dachau showed just how horrible war
can be, and gave me insight into the life of a man I never knew.
"Collections and (re)collections" is a powerful project, whether seen
from the individual level of one man's experiences in war, or simply as
a social and political commentary. I am proud to have been a part of it,
no matter how small my role may have been.
