Work progressed throughout the war, and finally, in 1945, a test bomb was ready. The site for the first nuclear test was code-named "Trinity," and on July 16, 1945, near Alamogordo, New Mexico, the world's first nuclear explosion was detonated. The test was successful, and President Truman made the decision to use an atomic bomb against Japan, who, unlike Germany, had not yet surrendered. On August 6, 1945, a B-29 bomber named Enola Gay released its single bomb nicknamed "Little Boy" over the city of Hiroshima, Japan.
