Admiral Yamamoto, a career naval officer in the Imperial Japanese Navy, planned the sneak attack on Pearl Harbor. However, he opposed war with the United States, for he had been to America and seen its technological and industrial capabilities and knew Japan would not last long against such a nation. After Pearl Harbor, Yamamoto planned the attack and occupation of Midway, but the United States discovered the plan and defeated the Japanese fleet in the Battle of Midway Island.
Military intelligence also uncovered Yamamoto's travel plans in April 1943. With this knowledge, American fighters were sent to intercept Yamamoto's plane, which was shot down on April 18, 1943, killing the Admiral and all on board.
