This action forced the American navy to withdraw, leaving the Marines on their own.
The Japanese then began landing more of their own forces on Guadalcanal, and on August 18, launched an assault with the Ichiki Detachment (900 men strong) against the well-defended Henderson Field. The assault was an utter disaster for the Japanese. All 900 men were killed in what was named the Battle of Tenaru River. But even as the Japanese continued to land more and more troops on Guadalcanal, the Americans kept gaining more territory.
