USS Lexington
The Battle of Coral Sea (May 4-8, 1942)

The Japanese, under the command of Vice Admiral Inoue Shigeyosh, attempted to invade and occupy Port Moresby but were met by United States, British, and Australian Naval forces under the command of Admiral Jack Fletcher.

The battle was carried out almost exclusively by naval aircraft on both sides. Attacks were made on each other's carriers, with the U.S. losing the Lexington and the Yorktown being seriously damaged. The Japanese carrier Shokaku was also seriously damaged while the Zuikaku emerged unscathed.     (MORE)
