Photograph: Miners on Elevator Exiting Mine

Original Title/Caption: “Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (vicinity). Montour no. 4 mine of the Pittsburgh Coal. Coal Miners leaving the cage after coming up from the mine bottom.”

 

Description: This black and white photograph shows four miners in the elevator coming out of the mine.  Their backs are turned toward the camera.  Fencing lines the edges of the mine shaft, and two sets of railroad tracks run outward from the entrance of the mine.  This photograph was taken in November 1942 by John Collier.

Historical discussion: Ultimately, the fate of American soldiers and workers were connected.  War needs drove the American economy, and American production provided the military with weapons, airplanes, ships, tanks, jeeps, and other equipment and supplies.
